<p>We made it!!! It’s the FINAL week of the 2010 Hughes Summer!</p>
<p>For the last time this year….Here’s the “411” for the week</p>
<p><em>Symposium Prep</em>-</p>
<p><strong>Regardless of your symposium presentation format, or other opportunities to practice,  <span style="text-decoration:underline;">ALL scholars are expected to attend</span> one practice session this week (8/3 or 8/4) and review their FINAL presentation with a grad student.</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;ll provide dinner in 216 Stimson Hall at 5pm, and then break out into practice rooms at 5:30pm.</p>
<p><em>Upcoming events:</em></p>
<p>*<strong>Monday, August 2nd  –Panel on Scientific Information &amp; Informed Consent- The Case of Henrietta Lacks</strong>, 206 Stimson Hall, 5pm – 7pm. We will have invited guest speakers join us to talk about the many different aspects of the book. Dinner will be provided.</p>
<p>*<strong>Tuesday, August 3rd – Symposium Practice Session #2</strong>. 5:00PM – 7:30PM, Stimson Hall.</p>
<p><strong>*Wednesday, August 4th – Symposium Practice Session #2</strong>. 5:00pm- 7:30pm, Stimson Hall.</p>

<p>The formatting requirements for your Final Symposium Abstract are:</p>

<p><em>•Should include brief background on the project, the approach/methods used, and any preliminary data or results </em></p>
<p><em>•Should be no longer than 300 words in length</em></p>
<p><em> •Should be written in 11pt font &#8211; Times </em></p>

<p><strong>Upcoming events</strong>:</p>
<p>* <strong>Symposium Practice Session #1 – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday this week (July 27<sup>th</sup> -29<sup>th</sup>) 5pm – 7pm, Stimson Hall.</strong> ALL Scholars are expected to attend a practice session this week. We will meet at 5pm in 216 Stimson for dinner. Practice will begin at 5:30pm.  Each evening, scholars will be broken into groups of 6-7 each and will meet with a graduate student. At this practice, regardless of symposium presentation format (Talk or Poster), every scholar will display a draft of their presentation and speak for 12 minutes. Data IS NOT required at this point, this is a first draft of your work!</p>
<p><strong>*Stem Cell Journal Club- Two events this week! </strong><strong>Wednesday, July 28</strong><sup><strong>th</strong></sup>- 12:00pm – 1:30pm- Butcher Lab tour &amp; Pizza lunch. <strong>Thursday, July 29</strong><sup><strong>th</strong></sup> &#8211; 12:00pm – 1:30pm- Lunch and discussion with Dr. Lisa Fortier in S1007 Schurman Hall.</p>
<p><strong>*</strong><strong>Thursday, July 29<sup>th</sup>, Hughes Faculty Lecture &amp; Lunch: w/ Guest Speaker: Dr. Ian Hewson, 12- 1:30pm,</strong> 226 Weill Hall. We have asked Dr. Hewson to give a presentation on his research on biological oceanography and microbial ecology (known as microbial oceanography) and understanding the structure and function of the marine microbial loop and how it relates to biogeochemical function on local and global scales. <p>*<strong>Tuesday, July 20<sup>th</sup>, How to Give a Truly Wonderful Hughes Presentation, 4:45pm – 6:00pm, Morrison Room, Corson-Mudd Halls (FINAL SESSION!)</strong> Attendance at ONE of these sessions is mandatory for all Hughes Scholars. This is step one in prep for the Hughes Scholars Research Symposium on August 6<sup>th</sup>. Laurel will discuss the various parts of a scientific presentation, and share expectations for poster and oral presentations at the symposium.</p>
<p><strong>*Wednesday, July 21<sup>st</sup>, FINAL Summer Book Discussion, 5:00pm – 7:00pm, 206 Stimson Hall. </strong>We’ll meet one last time to discuss the third section of the book. We will also have two guest speakers with us. Dr. Nick Salvatore from the school of Industrial Labor Relations, and Dr. Gary Evans, from Human Ecology.</p>
<p>Dr. Salvatore is a noted scholar and author and will share his experience of “giving birth” to his works. He’s written books on Eugene V. Debbs, Rev. C.L. Franklin, and Amos Webber.</p>

<p>Dr. Evans will share his experience working with human subjects. He is an environmental and developmental psychologist. He has been conducting a longitudinal study on the effect physical environments have on health and well being among children. In particular he is looking at the environment of poverty.</p>

We have asked Dr. Fromme to give a presentation on his research on how proteins and membranes are trafficked within eukaryotic cells. For more information on his work, visit this link:</p>

Students who have signed up will receive another email discussing final details of the trip. We will be dropped off at Weill Cornell Medical College. We will depart NYC by 7pm. Students who miss our return trip will be responsible for finding their own transportation back to Ithaca. We will provide, breakfast, snacks, and movies on the bus. If you are attending, please remind your research mentors that you will not be on campus.</p>

<p>1.) Links to the journal articles have been provided in the chart.<br />
2.) Each scholar is expected to attend one session #2 during the next two weeks.  Each session should have no less than three people, but no more than six.<br />
3.) Scholars are expected to have read the article prior to the session day.<br />
4.) Scholars should arrive in 216 Stimson Hall by 5pm. We&#8217;ll provide dinner and information on what room in Stimson you will be meeting.<br />

<p>*<strong>Tuesday, July 13<sup>th</sup>, Hughes Faculty Lecture &amp; Lunch: w/ Guest Speaker: Dr. Joe Fetcho, Neurobiology &amp; Behavior, 12- 1:30pm,</strong> Whittaker Room 4<sup>th</sup> Floor, Corson Hall. We have asked Dr. Fetcho to give a presentation on his research on movements produced by the brain and spinal cord. For more information on his work, visit this link:</p>

<p><strong>*Friday, July 16<sup>th</sup>, How to Give a Truly Wonderful Hughes Presentation, 12:00pm – 1:30pm, Morrison Room, Corson-Mudd Halls.</strong> Attendance at ONE of these sessions is mandatory for all Hughes Scholars. This is step one in prep for the Hughes Scholars Research Symposium on August 6<sup>th</sup>. Laurel will discuss the various parts of a scientific presentation, and share expectations for poster and oral presentations at the symposium.</p>
<p><strong>*Friday, July 16<sup>th</sup>, Sign-ups for Symposium Presentations will go “LIVE.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>Travel/Leave Request forms</strong></p>
<p>If folks are going to be away for a short period of time during the program, they must complete a travel/leave request form. It must be signed by your research mentor and provide dates for when you will make up the absence. The forms are in my office.</p>

<p>I am posting a bit early this week, because Laurel and I will be in a day-long retreat tomorrow. I hope you were able to stay cool this weekend. I was sad to see the USA lose to Ghana, but I did order my Tim Howard Club Everton jersey today! <p><strong>JULY 4<sup>th</sup> Holiday!</strong></p>
<p>In Ithaca, the fireworks are NEVER on the 4<sup>th</sup>, but rather before. This year the Community Fireworks have been moved to the campus of TC3 in Dryden on Thursday, July 1<sup>st</sup>.</p>

<p>Also, the University (including our office) will be closed on Monday, July 5<sup>th</sup> in observance of the holiday. Please check with your faculty member and lab to see what is expected of you for that day as well.</p>

<p>*<strong>Tuesday, June 29<sup>th</sup>, Lab Tours and Talk about Getting Involved with Research</strong>, <strong>2:30pm-4:00pm</strong> We are looking for about 8 students who would be willing to take 3 students to your lab and show them around- talk to them about how you got interested in research and got involved.  The tour should last about 30 minutes, then everyone will come back together for a panel discussion and questions.</p>
<p>The students are admitted freshmen in the College of Arts and Sciences that are here for the summer in the Pre-freshmen Summer Program.  They will be very excited to be at Cornell and to meet you!</p>
<p><strong>If interested, please send an email to Laurel (les3). </strong>Any one have any friends working in chemistry or physics?- we need them also!</p>

<p><strong>*Wednesday, June 30<sup>th</sup>, Graduate Student &amp; Hughes Alumni Panel Discussion, 5:00pm – 7:00pm, 206 Stimson Hall. </strong> We have asked some graduate students and a few Hughes Alums to join us for dinner and discussion about their experiences in graduate school. They come from varied backgrounds and research areas. They will be candid and share their unique perspectives about life as a graduate student.</p>
<p>We<strong><em> STRONGLY</em></strong> encourage scholars to attend this event. These invited guests are excited to meet with you and answer any questions you might have. We’ll provide a tasty dinner. Scholars interested in attending, please send me an email (pd43) by Tuesday, June 29<sup>th</sup>.</p>

<p>A few notes to remember about Journal Clubs:</p>
<p>1.) Links to the journal articles have been provided in the chart.<br />
2.) Each scholar is expected to attend one session #1 during the next two weeks.  Each session should have no less than three people, but no more than six.<br />
3.) Scholars are expected to have read the article prior to the session day.<br />
4.) Scholars should arrive in 216 Stimson Hall by 5pm. We&#8217;ll provide dinner and information on what room in Stimson you will be meeting.</p>

<p><strong>Lab Tours and Talk about Getting Involved with Research</strong></p>
<p>On June 29th from 2:30-4:00 we are looking for about 8 students who would be willing to take 3 students to your lab and show them around- talk to them about how you got interested in research and got involved.  The tour should last about 30 minutes, then everyone will come back together for a panel discussion and questions.</p>
<p>The students are admitted freshmen in the College of Arts and Sciences that are here for the summer in the Prefreshmen Summer Program.  They will be very excited to be at Cornell and to meet you!</p>
<p><strong>If interested, please send an email to Laurel (les3). </strong>Any one have any friends working in chemistry or physics?- we need them also!</p>

<p>Hope your weekend was pleasant. Saturday, I had a blast watching the World Cup match with England and the USA. I will admit I now have a BIG crush on USA goalie Tim Howard, and did feel a little bad for England’s goalie, Robert Green.</p>
<p><strong><em>Stipend Checks</em></strong></p>
<p>Scholars receiving a stipend this summer- we hope to have your checks this week. I have confirmed that they were processed, and have been assured that money will be available no later than the end of this week. I know for many this isn’t the best news, and I apologize for the delay. The system by which we have appointed you, is processed through the bursar’s office. So students will need to submit a request to the Bursar’s office for a check from your account. Scholars who have questions, please stop in and see me.</p>
<p><strong><em>COLTS</em></strong></p>
<p>Scholars who are being paid hourly- COLTS Approvals are due Wednesday, June 16<sup>th</sup> by 10am. Please remind your supervisor they must approve your hours no later than 12noon on Wednesday. Questions about access to the online COLTS system, should be directed to your research department payroll representative.</p>
<p><strong><em>OSHA Lab Safety Training on Blackboard</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-weight:normal;">Scholars who were not able to attend the OSHA Lab Safety training seminar on Wednesday, June 10<sup>th</sup>, should go to the following link:</span></strong></p>

<p><strong>Research Project Description <em>were due LAST Friday, June 11<sup>th</sup>.</em></strong></p>
<p>You should describe the project that you will be working on this summer. Please include the question that you are asking, general background information on the project and the approach that you are taking to answer this question.</p>
<p>It should be approximately 1 page in length. In general, 4-5 sentences should be sufficient to cover the specific background information and the same amount to describe your project. All descriptions <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">must be submitted electronically to me at pd43.</span></strong></p>

<p>Yesterday was fantastic! We hope you had fun and met some new people. Rick made a special point to tell me how much he appreciated all your hard work, and was impressed with how willing every one was to help.</p>

<p>Now that we kicked off the program with our retreat… it’s time to get down to work in lab. Just a reminder that we expect you started working the lab today.</p>

<p>It should be approximately 1 page in length. In general, 4-5 sentences should be sufficient to cover the specific background information and the same amount to describe your project. All descriptions must be submitted <em>electronically to me at pd43.</em></p>
<p><strong>Upcoming events:</strong></p>
<p><strong>*Wednesday, June 10th, OSHA Lab Safety, 9am -11am, Auditorium, Boyce Thompson Institute.</strong> This training is <strong>MANDATORY</strong> for all undergraduates working in a lab. If you have taken the training already (Seminar or blackboard session), AND you haven’t shared the month and date you did the training, please do so ASAP.</p>
<p><strong>*Friday, June 11<sup>th</sup>, Lunch w/ Laurel (Biotech. Bldg), 12:00pm – 1:30pm, 202 Biotechnology Bldg.</strong> Students in this building will meet Laurel for lunch to talk science. We’ll order lunch, you only need to show up!</p>
<p><strong>*Friday, June 11<sup>th</sup>, Summer Programs ICE CREAM SOCIAL, Stimson Hall (Outside facing Arts Quad) 4:30pm – 5:30pm. </strong>Please bring your faculty mentor and lab mates. We’ll have plenty of ice cream and lots of toppings!</p>
<p><em><strong>Travel/Leave Request forms</strong></em></p>
<p>If folks are going to be away for a short period of time during the program, they must complete a travel/leave request form. It must be signed by your research mentor and provide dates for when you will make up the absence. The forms are in my office, and will be made available online by the end of the week.</p>
<p><em><strong>A Note about Participation this summer:</strong></em></p>
<p>In general, Laurel and I expect that your research is your #1 priority.  There are a few sessions that we schedule that we expect every  scholar to attend as well. They are:</p>
<p><em>*Opening day retreat (DONE!)</em></p>
<p><em>*How to give a Wonderful Hughes Talk (one of the two sessions offered)</em></p>
<p><em>*Lunches with Laurel</em></p>
<p><em>*Journal Clubs (2 sessions)</em></p>

<p><em>*Hughes Research Symposium- August 6<sup>th</sup></em></p>
<p>We have planned some very valuable sessions during June that will help you begin to make your post-Cornell plans. We have invited speakers who will be a tremendous resource for you. We encourage you to take FULL advantage of these opportunities.</p>

<p>Symposium Prep-</p>
<p>Symposium Practice Sessions- ALL scholars are expected to attend one session this week: (8/3, 8/4, 8/5) PLEASE SIGN UP! Students should sign up at:</p>

<p>and then plan on checking in with me in 216 Stimson before the practice begins</p>
<p>•    NOTE- Regardless of your symposium presentation format, ALL scholars are expected to attend a practice session and review their presentation with a grad student.</p>

<p>*Monday, August 3rd  &#8211; Symposium Practice Session #2. 6:00PM – 7:30PM, Stimson Hall. Students should come prepared to go over with a graduate student their final symposium presentation.</p>

<p>*Friday, August 7th– Cornell Hughes Scholars Research Symposium. Invites were sent last week to all Biology faculty members, including your mentors. Please invite you friends and lab mates to join us as well.</p>
