Symposium Prep-

Symposium Practice Sessions- ALL scholars are expected to attend one session this week: (8/3, 8/4, 8/5) PLEASE SIGN UP! Students should sign up at:

Hiya Hughesies!

Six of our Hughes Scholars were at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium this past weekend in Chantilly, VA with Laurel and I.  They gave presentations on their Hughes research. They did an AMAZING job!! If you see Bertheleau, Michael, Khalil, Bradley, Carlos or Andre, please be sure to congratulate them!

Opportunity to meet with Dr. Michelle D. Nearon, Assistant Dean and Director, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Yale University on Thursday, July 30th. Dr. Nearon will be here from 9am – 12pm to meet with students interested in graduate studies at Yale. If you are interested in meeting with Dr. Nearon for an individual appointment, please email me (pd43) by Wednesday, July 29th. Sign ups are first come, first serve and will be offered to other summer programs on campus as well!

Laurel and I will be out of the office this Friday – Sunday with our Leadership Alliance Summer Program, and 6 Hughes scholars who will be presenting their work at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium, in Chantilly, VA. We are leaving campus at 6am on Friday. If you need to reach us, please send us an email and we will try to get back to you by early afternoon.

Journal Clubs are DONE! Great job everyone for showing up and participating. The graduate students enjoyed meeting you and said you came prepared for each session.

Symposium Prep- Now we move on to preparing for our Hughes Symposium on August 7th.   Two things this week, we need you to start working on. By this Friday, July 24th, you need to submit an abstract for the meeting. (NO EXCEPTIONS) Additionally, by Friday, July 24th, I need to know what format you would like to present your research in. See more details in my notes below.

Symposium Practice Sessions- ALL scholars will be expected to attend one of three Session #1 Symposium practices (7/23, 7/29, 7/30), and one of three Final Symposium practices (8/3, 8/4, 8/5).

Cool Talk on Wednesday, July 22nd 7:30pm, Alice Statler Auditorium, Statler Hall- Brian Wansink, will give a lecture- “Mindless Eating: Secrets and Solutions.” This event is free and open to the Cornell Community. *Friday, July 24th – Scholars select presentation format for Symposium. We have 24 slots available on Friday, August 7th for talks. There will be 6 talks in each of these disciplines:

Cell Biology
Biomedical Sciences
Organismal
NBB/Psych/Nutrition

Slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. HOWEVER, Laurel and I reserve the right to change the presentation format for any scholar. Journal Clubs Sessions #2 are this week. Scholars will select a session/paper, select a figure in the paper, pair-off with a fellow scholar in the group and present the figure to the rest of the group.

*Tuesday, July 14th- Faculty Guest Speaker- Dr. Nate Sutter, Vet Clinical Sciences. Dr. Sutter studies the gene variants that make dogs susceptible to cancer and other diseases.  He is also interested in genes that contribute to differences in body size in the dog. Due to selective breeding over many generations, great Danes and other giant breed dogs are 50 times more massive than Yorkshire terriers and Chihuahuas. No other mammal species exhibits such size diversity.

Dr. Sutter will be speaking with high school teachers on campus participating in the Hughes funded Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers, from 4pm – 5:30pm in 1120 Snee Hall. All scholars are invited to attend this session. Dr. Sutter is a super nice guy, and this talk is always very popular.  (http://www.vet.cornell.edu/faculty/Sutter/)

*Wednesday, July 15th- Hughes Journal Club (Session #2), 5:30pm – 7:00pm, Stimson Hall. I sent a separate email earlier today with info on the sessions being offered. Students should download the journal article at http://groups.google.com/group/2009-hughes-scholars-journal-club. When selecting your paper here, please be careful to see if there are supplemental materials that are included.

*Thursday July 16th- Hughes Journal Club Session #2, 5:30-7:00pm, Stimson Hall.

*Friday, July 17th-12:00pm – 1:30pm, How to Give a Truly Wonderful Hughes Presentation (LAST CHANCE- MANDATORY for ALL scholars) Morrison Room, Corson-Mudd Halls.
At this session Laurel will go over the parts of a successful presentation on your research for various audiences. This session is step #1 in preparation for the Hughes Research Symposium on August 1st.

*Friday, July 17th, Another Summer ICE CREAM SOCIAL!! 4:30pm – 5:30pm, in front of Stimson Hall (facing the Arts Quad). We’ll have some yummy ice cream from the Cornell Diary and loads of toppings. Please bring your research faculty member and your lab mates.

Here’s the “411” for the week:

List serve sign ups
Many of you have signed up for the list serve. Thank you. Beginning this week, I will only send program info to the list serve.

COLTS DUE!
All scholars being paid hourly must enter and approve their hours worked in COLTS by 10am on Wednesday, June 17th. If you have trouble, please contact your research department’s payroll representative.

Communication
We mentioned at the retreat and it is written in our policy book, we will communicate by “mass email” with you. Please check your email regularly and frequently.

Additionally, if you are trying to reach Laurel or I, please be clear in your email or voicemail, what you are looking for, and please provide information on how we may contact you. Bear in mind also, that we both get close to 100 emails a day that we sort through.

Research Project Description WERE due Friday, June 12th.
If you haven’t submitted it electronically to me (pd43) please do so by Tomorrow, June 16th.

You should describe the project that you will be working on this
summer. Please include the question that you are asking, general background information on the project and the approach that you are taking to answer this question.

It should be approximately 1 page in length. In general, 4-5 sentences should be sufficient to cover the specific background

Welcome Hughesies!

This is the first official Hughes 411 of Summer 2009!

What’s the “411?”
Each week I will post the 411 with info on events happening in the program. Most weeks I will post on Mondays.

Hughes Retreat at Arnot Forest
Yesterday, we kicked our summer off with our annual retreat at Arnot Forest. We hope that you had fun, met some new friends, and enjoyed talking about science for awhile. You guys did a FANTASTIC job with the ethics scenerios. Kudos to all of you! AND the catchphrase marathon was very impressive.

Head Into the Lab
Now that we kicked off the program with our retreat… it’s time to get down to work in lab. Just a reminder that we expect you started working the lab today.

List serve sign ups
I wrote at the beginning of the month about signing up for the Hughes List serve. If you haven’t done so yet, please do it ASAP. This will be the 1st and only time I will send the 411 message to your individual emails.

As I wrote earlier this afternoon, this session was scheduled for this morning, unfortunately, I put it on the calendar for tomorrow. We are rescheduling this  session for Monday, June 15th. Stay tuned for a separate email with details on time and location.  This training is REQUIRED for all undergraduates working in a lab. If you have taken the training already (Seminar or blackboard session), you need to send me the month and year you took it.

every scholar to attend as well.

*Hughes Research Symposium- August 7th

Also, we have planned some very valuable sessions during June that will help you begin to make your post-Cornell plans. We have invited speakers who will be a tremendous resource for you. We really encourage you to take FULL advantage of these opportunities.

Poster Session- 2:30pm – 4:00pm (Atrium of Corson-Mudd)

(The boards will be up in the morning on Friday if scholars want to put their posters up beginning at 10:30am.)

A note about the lunch: We will provide each scholar with a lunch ticket for entrance to the lunch. Additionally, each scholar will have up to 2 lunch tickets to invite their faculty member and one additional guest to join us too. The maximum capacity is 150 pp. Tickets are available in my office. Please come see me by Thursday.

 A note about participation on Friday: We hope that scholars will support their fellow scholars and attend as many presentations as they can. It is very important that we be on time for the group photo on the terrace, as our photographer will likely be running between two events that day. Additionally, please be sure to invite your lab mates to the talks or poster sessions too.

 Check #4 will be  AVAILABLE this week by Thursday, July 31st. In exchange for your $$, scholars will need to submit three things:

#1 Complete a program evaluation (coming electronically tomorrow afternoon),

# 2 submit an online HHMI summer evaluation (link coming from Laurel) and finally and most importantly

#3 a 2-3 page progress report on their Hughes research. In the report, you should describe briefly what your project was this summer, highlight what went well, and what didn’t and the future direction of the project.

One last note: This summer has been one of the best yet! You Hughesies were a fantastic cohort this year. I hope you made some new friends, and enjoyed yourselves over these past nine weeks. We have a saying in the program: “Once a Hughesie, always a Hughesie”. Your family now. Please keep in touch after the summer, we always love to hear what you are up to. Finally, if there is ever anything we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to ask.
