July 21, 2008 by capnethelJuly 21, 2008
Heya Hughesies! Can’t believe we are almost at the end of July! Where has the summer gone?? Thanks to those of you who joined us for bowling Friday night. Laurel and I had a blast!
Here is what’s coming up this week:
Hughes Symposium Practices start TONIGHT!! 5:30-7:30pm
Stimson Hall. We will break the groups out into 4 breakout rooms. There will be 6 students per session. Scholars should come a few minutes early to have a quick bite to eat and check in with me in 216 Stimson.
Scholars will have 10-12 minutes to present their work. These practice sessions are a chance for scholars to prepare for the Symposium next Friday, August 1st.
All scholars are expected to attend one session.
The practice on July 28th is an optional second session for interested scholars. Again, there will be four rooms available for practice. Sign up is first come, first serve.
Check #3 is AVAILABLE. Thanks for your patience with this glitch. I will have checks ready by 3pm and at practices tonight for sure. This check was in exchange for an abstract.
Hughes Guest Faculty Lunches–
Thursday, July 24th w/ Nate Sutter, Vet Clinical Sciences
Lunch will be served in the atrium of Corson Mudd at 12pm and Dr. Sutter’s presentation will follow in the Morrison Room there, at ~12:30pm. Dr. Sutter will speak for about 30-40 minutes. We will have ~15 minutes for questions.
Dr. Sutter works on gene variants that make dogs susceptible to cancer and other disease. He is also interested in genes that contribute to differences in body size in the dog, genetic basis of canine health, morphology, and canine genomics.
Seminar Presentation Line-up:
We’ll write to let you by Thursday AM what the final presentation line-up will look like. Laurel and the grad students at the practices tonight and Wednesday will make a recommendation. Please note that we have roughly 25 slots for 10 minute talks and ~25 slots for posters. We will be looking for a diversity of research projects to be represented in each.
